“How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire; and the tongue is a fire.” (James 3:5-6)

“How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire; and the tongue is a fire.” (James 3:5-6)

Remember Mrs. O'Leary's cow? In 1871 it knocked over a tiny lantern in a barn and started a fire that ended up setting the entire city of Chicago ablaze. The same can be true of our tongue. Though it is small in comparison to the rest of our body, the tongue can still be a mighty and destructive force which produces great devastation. One seemingly harmless word can often cut deeper than any knife and what we say can
devastate and destroy families, friendships, marriages, and churches – not to mention the effect it can have on entire countries and nations!

Just as Smokey the Bear’s motto proclaims that “only you can prevent forest fire,” St. James’ writings remind one and all that only you can prevent the emission of fiery words from your own lips!

Fr. John
