For the last pilgrimage this summer, we really wanted to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on St Brendan's Isle.
The day was beautiful and sunny, which solved one danger - that of heavy rain and strong winds - but brought about a different danger, that of the dreaded midges. Because of this, we decided not to celebrate in the ancient chapel, as we'd done previously, because its walls are tall enough to keep away any breeze (thus allowing the midges to feast on us). Instead, we went straight to St Brendan's beehive cells. One of the cells is half collapsed, which allows the breeze from the ocean to keep away all midges. We still had to keep an eye on the seagulls, which seemed rather interested in our prosphora, but we managed...
It was a wonderful day, a wonderful service and an experience I shall not forget. I could not have done this without the encouragement, help and support of our great pigrims - thank you all.
