“He was made known to them in the breaking of the
bread.” (24:35)
Although Jesus appeared unto two of His disciples as
they were walking towards Emmaus, it was not until that evening, when they
stopped to take rest for the night and broke bread together that they realized
who this man actually was. Interestingly, the expression breaking bread can be
understood both, literally and figuratively. Literally, because our Lord
probably did have a particular means of tearing and distributing the bread at
meal time that these men had witnessed often; and figuratively, since this term
can also refer to sharing a meal, Jesus undoubtedly had a specific routine,
beginning with the prayers he used. Either way, Jesus revealed Himself through
a very, unique but familiar action which the disciples were undoubtedly
accustomed to.
