Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell
In today’s gospel our Lord encounters two blind men who ask Him to restore their sight. Jesus says to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” and they answer, “Yes, Lord.” He then touches their eyes saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” (Matthew 9:28-29)
“Do you believe” and “Do you believe God is able to help you” are fundamental questions in calculating the extent of faith because that is how one exerts their faith…through “belief.” Therefore, God works and interaction in your life is “according to your faith.”
A window washer was washing windows on a skyscraper in New York City when a cable on one side of his platform suddenly snapped. The whole device tilted downward as buckets, rags, and equipment slid off, plummeting towards the sidewalk far below.
Miraculously, the window washer somehow managed to catch hold onto a piece of the scaffolding as he was falling, and there he dangled; suspended between life and death.
Realizing his imminent plight and knowing that it would take too long for anyone to reach him, he called out a last prayer to God amidst unimaginable terror: “Have mercy upon me, O Lord, and save me!”
Suddenly the man heard God’s reassuring voice: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
Shocked, but filled with hope, the man shouted back, “Yes Lord, I believe!”
The voice of God responded, “If you believe…then let go.”
