“Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder)…” (2nd Peter 3:1)
Epistle is the Greek word meaning “letter,” and these letters collected and assigned as being part of the New testament were written by Paul, Peter, John, James, etc. They were meant to be either didactic, up-lifting, and encouraging, or also self-correcting and in some cases even a serious chastisement, which the apostle needed to send to correct behaviors or actions which they physically could not due to distance.
