“Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.” (Isaiah 1:22)

“Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.” (Isaiah 1:22)

As a prophet, God’s own “mouthpiece,” Isaiah chastises the people for polluting themselves through sin and evil habits. He very poetically describes the Hebrews as being pure silver that has become dross – imbued with the impurities that are normally burned off during refining, and like fine wine that is diluted with water. Therefore, he encourages them to reverse the order of things and mend their relationship with God and live life as He intended. A perfect message for us, also, who are striving to do just that during this Great Fast and Lenten Journey.
