Historically, when making the sign of the cross upon your person, it was done from right to left, as is still practiced in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Western, or Roman Catholics (Latin Rite) however, altered this method somewhere around Medieval times, going from left to right, although Eastern Rite Catholics continue to follow the Eastern Orthodox Church’s practice.
