“This is an evil generation.” (Luke 11:29)
Although our Lord was speaking to those in His day and age, sin, in all its varied states, has governed man since that first act of disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, sadly, as the Prophet Jeremiah said, the consequences of sin from one generation are visited upon the next (Jer. 32:18). In other words, when parents lead sinful lifestyles, their children are likely to practice the same sinful lifestyle. We learn by example, and a poor example leads to poor choices.
Sin, by its very nature, is destructive and damaging. It creates dysfunction and breaks down people and their relationships with others. And although sin is a mighty force, our Lord proved that man can overcome sin, albeit for a time. We must simply turn from our sinful ways, repent of evil deeds, place our trust in God, and rely on Christ’s help…for no one can do this on their own.
Fr. John
