I once read that if you trap flies in a glass jar with a lid, they will fly around seeking a way out. Eventually, however, they will become accustomed to the boundaries and realize their inability to escape; so much so that if you were to remove the lid, they would continue to fly around the interior of the jar, but never venture upwards past the rim.
We are often like those trapped flies: remaining in our "comfort zones," governed by the limitations of weak faith, never expanding our efforts or seeking to excel upwards and grow.
In today's gospel lesson two blind men – who are definitely trapped and limited by their ailment – push the boundaries of their comfort zone to get to Christ. They not only leave their familiar surroundings to follow Him into uncharted territory, but even enter into a strange home to seek His help; no small feat for a blind person!
Perhaps if we ventured forth and actually pushed the limits of our faith from time to time we, too, would find all that which we desire and need for our healing, salvation, and a greater, truer vision of God in our lives.
Fr. John
