Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

Jesus employed a myriad of methods to educate those whom He came into contact with. He preached, showed by example, proclaimed truth and wisdom, interpreted Holy Scripture, taught plainly, and by using parables. Yet there were times when our Lord also taught using “hyperbole.”

Hyperbole comes from the Greek and means, “to throw over someone’s head.” In other words, hyperbole is a purposely over-exaggerated rhetorical device used to convey a simple meaning; as in today’s analogy of one’s capability to move a mountain if they had even the faith the size of a mustard seed.

The real point was not to believe that someone can move a mountain, but to show that we do not need a great faith to do great things; rather, great things can be accomplished even with a small faith in a great God.

Fr. John
