“Draw near…” (James 4:8)

As the Chalice is brought forth to distribute the Holy Eucharist (Communion), the priest or deacon intones, “In the fear of God, and with faith, draw near.” This expression demonstrates the gravity of the moment, as well as the “awe” we should experience in daring to partake of Christ’s precious Body and Blood. In addition, by “drawing near” to Christ we also draw near to one another, and this closeness of this bond unites us all in fellowship as a family.
