"Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith." (2nd Cor. 13:5)
When we think about ourselves, we normally assume that we are good and decent; as someone living a righteous and just life. However, one element of sin is that it confuses and distorts how we view ourselves, causing us to believe we are better than we are. Therefore, St. Paul asks us to really "examine ourselves" to consider our life and actions to discern and find evidence of the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, peace, forbearance, gentle, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23).
