"The Mega
Dukas Alexis Apocaukos (Greek: Ἀλέξιος Ἀπόκαυκος) (died 1345) was a statesman and military officer of
high rank Byzantine (Grand Almirant, Prime Minister) during the reigns of the
emperors Andronicus III Palaiologos and John V Palaiologos. Although he owed
his ascent to the sponsorship of John VI Cantacuzeno, became, along with the
patriarch John XIV Kalekas, one of the faction leaders who supported the
Emperor John V in the civil war of 1341-1347 against his former benefactor. The
illustration shows the Megas Dukas, assisted by the Megas Dukas Flamoularios or
standard bearer, a guard of Tzakones and a Jewish merchant.
