"Jesus said to him, 'Go; your son will live.' The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went his way." (John 4:50)
One of the rudimentary qualities God requires of every Christian is faith; and at times this faith is going to be tested. This is exactly what occurs in today's gospel. Like so many Bible stories, the healing of the official's son is not only a lesson on faith, but one that actually challenges us to strengthen or own.
The official journeyed about 20 miles to ask Jesus to come back to his home and heal his ailing son. Jesus, however, simply tells the man to go and believe that his son will live. Although the official probably didn't expect so stark an answer (after all, he walked there anticipating that Jesus would come back with him and physically heal of his son), he nonetheless accepts the Lord at His word and begins his 20 mile trek home, only to find that his son was indeed healed – and at the exact time Jesus had proclaimed it!
This entire episode serves to remind us that Tested Faith added to a Trusting Faith equals a Triumphant Faith!
Fr. John
