“Consider the lilies of the field…” (Luke 12:27)

“Consider the lilies of the field…” (Luke 12:27)

During that great discourse known as the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the people and opens their minds to many truths. Among them, He contrasted temporary earthly riches with eternal heavenly treasure, challenging them not to worry or be anxious about temporal things, but to put unwavering trust in God Who is our great Provider.

Our Lord utilized food and clothing as basic examples of general needs, yet to modern ears He might as well have said “house payments, groceries, utility bills,” any number of everyday concerns that might be a source of anxiety.

Jesus builds upon this theme by using simple analogies of birds and flowers to remind us that neither plant crops or make clothing, but just as God cares for them, He values and cares for us. We are precious in His sight.

Therefore, t essence of our existence is much more than what we shall eat or wear. The purpose of this life is to prepare us for the world to come.

Fr. John
