In today’s gospel Jesus contrasts the size of mustard seed, one of the tiniest seeds on earth, with the enormity of a mountain; providing an analogy that even a small amount of faith in Christ can allow one to overcome the most formidable obstacles, calamities, and painful difficulties in life.
During Old Testament times, the Israelites were fighting a losing battle against their enemies, the Philistines; mainly because they were intimidated by the sheer size of Goliath, a soldier of gigantic stature who towered over everyone. Yet, while the Hebrew soldiers focused their attention upon how big Goliath was, David, a tiny shepherd boy, simply saw how much smaller Goliath was compared to God.
Scripture points to the fact that there are no persons, circumstances, or situations greater than God. He is bigger than any temptation, sin, sickness, disease, problem, or failure. Therefore, when we place our lives in His through an act of faith, He gives us the power to conquer and overwhelm even the most imposing difficulties.
That is why on Great and Holy Pascha we proclaim with such great fervor and resonance that verse from Psalm 77: “Who is so great a god as our God? Thou art the God Who does Wonders!” (Psalm 77:13-14)
Fr. John
