Protection
Dečani is the
only monastery in Kosovo and Metohija to remain under the protection of
international forces.
Kosovo is the
literal heart of the Serbian nation, and the center of almost all their most
sacred holy sites. It was a land that in recent memory was a happy part of the
Serbian motherland, as it was for centuries. This land was then forcibly taken
from Serbia by Muslims who persecute the Serbian Church with the support of
NATO.
While life
here is relatively isolated, the Monastery still tries to maintain its
traditional hospitality.
Orthodox
Christian pilgrims regularly come to the Monastery from Kosovo and Metohija,
other parts of Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other
Orthodox from throughout the world. A large number of pilgrims come especially
for the Monastery’s feast days, the feasts of Holy King Stefan of Dečani on 24
November, the Ascension of the Lord (date varies, 50 days after Pascha/Easter),
and the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos on 28 August. On these special
days, the Divine Liturgy served in Dečani’s magnificent church is full with
hundreds of believers.
