Saint Maximus the Confessor says that love is the virtue of the will - not just the virtue of feeling and emotion.

One finds love easy because he thinks that it is just a feeling – not the will expressed in action.
This is a problem…
It turns out that something is missing on our part, because action requires struggle, toil, self-sacrifice and not just emotion.
And if we don’t keep this in mind, then our love for God will turn into an abstract emotion.
The Lord Himself says: “the person that keeps my commandments is the one who loves me.”
It is like He brought this feeling closer to us on earth, telling us to show Him our deeds and actions.
For this reason, Apostle Peter is concerned, as he betrayed Christ three times through his actions.
Archpriest Theodore Gignadze
