"Citius, Altius, Fortius!"
"Citius,
Altius, Fortius!" is the Olympic motto which, in Latin means,
"Swifter, Higher, Stronger!" And given that tonight we will
experience the opening of these Winter Olympic Games, it's intriguing to note
that St. Paul actually uses the analogy of running the Marathon – the
quintessential Olympic event – to illustrate the Christian life: "Do you
not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the
prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in
all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable
one." (1st Corinthians 9:24-25)
Paul's point
was that every Christian is called upon to train themselves to excel in the
Faith. To have the spiritual discipline and motivation needed to compete
against evil and complete the course set before us because, in doing so, we
will receive the ultimate prize of our high calling; not a perishable laurel
wreath (gold medal), but entry into eternal mysteries and glory of God's
Kingdom!
Fr. John
