"It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer'..." (Luke 19:46)

When Jesus walked into the temple and saw the money-changers and merchants engaged in their business, it must have seemed more like walking into a mall rather than the House of God. It was precisely this cavalier, business-as-usual atmosphere inside the temple which enraged our Lord and caused His frenzied, yet uncharacteristic feat: overturning their tables and chasing the merchants out of the temple. And although it is not recorded, one can only imagine the surprise on the disciples' faces who, witnessed this event and literally saw coins clattering on the ground and feathers flying in the air as their Master quotes from the Prophet Isaiah; all because He desires His Father's House to be a prayerful sanctuary from the outside, commercial world.

Fr. John
