, “Golgotha.”

This famous painting by Russian artist, Nikolai Ge, hangs in the Tretyakov Museum and is entitled, “Golgotha.” It depicts our Lord amid two robbers with each figure subtly hinting at what is about to happen.

At its center, Christ is overcome by despair; he wrings his hands. His eyes are closed, and his head involuntarily leaned back radiating hopelessness as He foresees a long, painful death. One could almost imagine that this is the moment our Lord quoted from Psalm 22, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?”

Upon His right, a robber grimaces and stares blankly, with eyes widened in terror. The other robber is overcome with remorse, pondering both his dilemma, and misdeeds. Yet all three figures are motionless, as if frozen in anticipation for the inevitable.

From just off canvas a mysterious despotic hand appears, signaling the beginning of this fateful trek to Golgotha.

Fr. John
