Panaghia is also the word for the round pendent worn by bishops in the Orthodox Church as a symbol of their office. Just as a priest wears a pectoral cross to distinguish his rank, bishops ware a panaghia, which is usually rounded, oval, or square and bears a depiction (icon) of the Virgin Mary (undoubtedly how its name was derived).
Long ago, this pendent was actually a type of locket that contained the Holy Eucharist, meaning that as the bishop traveled he could administer the sacrament to those in need.
