In Genesis 28, it states that while traveling, Jacob came to a certain place in the evening and used a stone for a pillow. While he slept, he dreamed of a ladder to heaven upon which, angels were ascending and descending. When he woke, Jacob understood this to be a holy place, because he had encountered God. Therefore, he took the stone he had used as a pillow and turned it into a pillar to mark the site, poured oil upon it (to consecrate it) calling it Bethel, or the “House of God.”
We must keep in mind that all historical accounts in scripture specifically point to Jesus in symbolism, pattern, and typology. Thus, this particular stone represents Christ – Who is the rock of our salvation and the means by which we climb or “ascend” to heaven.
