The bombardment began on November 1, 1940 and lasted for months. Corfu did not have air defense facilities, so Italian bombers could fly at a particularly low altitude.

However, strange things happened during the bombing: both the pilots and those who were on the ground noticed that many bombs fell inconspicuously not straight down, but at an angle, and fall into the sea.

During the bombings, people flocked to the only shelter where they did not doubt to find protection and salvation - the church of St. Spyridon.

All the buildings around the church were badly damaged or destroyed, and it was preserved until the end of the war without damage, not even a single window glass cracked ...
