AN UNIMPRESSIBLE GENERATION (Monday, October 29)

“When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, ‘This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.’” (Lk 11: 29-32)

Why does Jesus call “this generation” evil? Because it remained unimpressed by Him, despite all the healings done by Him, and casting out of demons, and the feeding of the five thousand, etc. “This generation” was not moved, as was the Queen of the South (i.e., the Queen of Sheba, who, having heard about Solomon’s fame, came to him with a list of deep questions in 1 Kings 10), to leave their “ends of the earth” in order to come and hear the Wisdom of God, Jesus Christ. Nor was “this generation” moved, by the Presence of Christ in its midst, to “repentance” (a change of mind or focus), as were the inhabitants of Nineveh, after they heard the preaching of Jonah (Jonah 3: 6-10). No, “this generation” demanded “more” of a “sign” from Christ, even while they had so much “more” than did the Queen of Sheba or the Ninevitans.

Today let me not be like “this generation.” Let me not give in to despondency, and lack responsiveness to the Presence of the Lord in my little life. Let me be moved to hustle-and-bustle for the Lord, as was Martha; and also to sit at His feet for a while, as did Mary (Lk 10: 38-42). Because I can! Thank You, Lord, for giving us “more” than we could ever wish for, – Yourself. Glory be to You.
