“A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign…” (Matthew 16:4)
As mankind gets further and further away from God and our world becomes a more sinful place, people’s faith becomes weaker and weaker. And amidst this weakened faith comes about the ability to NOT believe in things we cannot see, touch, or grasp. Hence, when people of this “sinful and adulterous age” desire to know God, they are always seeking after a sign; some “proof” of God speaking directly to them as if to convince them.
Sadly, such an attitude often leads one down a dark alley which opens unto a world of superstitious beliefs, New Age dabbling in crystals and powders, and putting ones trust in “spiritual advisors” who placate individuals through comfortable reassurances and empty promises.
Christ went on to say, “….no sign shall be given you except the sign of Jonah,” a reference to the foreshadowing of Christ’s own death and resurrection after the pattern of Jonah’s three day’s spent in the belly of the great fish. Thus, the real and only sign given to all generations is the sign of the Cross!
Fr. John
