Zacchaeus is
eager to find out who Jesus Christ is as a Person.
Everybody is
interested in Christ… Apart from the Apostles, there are many people gathered
around Him:
The Pharisees
and High Priests are interested in Christ because they want to catch Him out,
and thus, they ask Him a lot of questions.
Some people
would like Him to heal them, while others expect Him to work miracles…
People are
keen on hearing Him discuss religious and legal issues.
However, they
aren’t interested in Jesus Christ Himself, they’re not interested personally in
Him.
The only
person interested in the Person of Jesus Christ is Zacchaeus the tax collector.
His
religiousness is expressed through action: he climbs a tree, even though he
isn’t sure that he'll manage to see Him… he climbs a tree regardless.
This is a
precious example for us because if we are true believers, then naturally, our
faith must be focused on knowing Christ personally, because Christianity means
having a personal relationship with the incarnate Living God.
If we do not
have a personal relationship with Christ, then even a pious and righteous way
of life is meaningless.
Even if we
had the ability to work miracles, it would be meaningless.
God took on
the human nature in order for us to have a personal relationship with Him.
Archpriest
Theodore Gignadze (Excerpt from sermon on February 2, 2020)
