Many
times we try to understand why something happens in our lives, usually
something that produces a lot of pain. Then we ask the Lord, “Why did you let
this happen?” or “Why me?”. Well, the same question was asked once by Saint
Antony the Great to our Lord. Specifically, he asked Him. “Lord, why some
people die young and others when are very old? Why some people are poor and
others rich? Why very sinful people become very rich and people that live their
lives close to You are poor?” At that time a voice was heard from above saying:
“Antony, you should only worry and care for yourself and be watchful not to
fall in sin. What you are asking are God’s judgements and it is not something
that will be good for you to learn!”
EVERGETINOS,
Proposition 17
In the Holy Mountain (Mount Athos), the Elders
say the following: “When you try to understand God’s judgements is like you are
trying to put the sea inside a glass. Better to take the glass and throw it in
the sea!”
