The parable
of the Prodigal Son has a deep symbolic meaning for each of us. It teaches us
that God forgives even the greatest of sinners, if they truly are sorrowful and
repentant for their sinful way of life. Yet in reality, this parable might be
the story of all of our lives, for each of us have strayed from the path of
righteousness that the Lord asks us to follow. It is only when we make the same
decision to "return to the Father" that we can expect to find true
happiness and reconciliation with the Lord our God. In the words of the Blessed
Augustine, himself a "prodigal son" who was away from the Church for
many years: "Our heart is restless, until it rests in God."
