"He set His face to go to Jerusalem..." (St. Luke 9:51)

As our Lord prepares to go unto His Passion, one of the most important elements to remember is that He accepted this challenge freely, suffering those atrocities voluntarily from start to finish and accepting them even though He had the power to avoid it. Therefore, it is the very freedom with which Christ accepts His bitter "cup of suffering" that makes it redemptive and allows us the opportunity to taste the fruit of His effort: the sweet cup of salvation.
