Our Lord often taught by using parables: short stories or analogies, set forth in very simple language, in order to illustrate a context or to drive home a point. He was also fond of using such elemental imagery so that the people He encountered could comprehend, relate to, and remember them. Christ routinely used everyday situations for His stories, such as baking bread, making wine, and trimming lamps. He also used archetypal characters such as shepherds, kings, servants, farmers, fisherman, a poor man, a rich man; or, as in the case of today's gospel lesson, the owner of a vineyard and his unruly servants.
