On that fate-filled day, Pontius Pilate found himself caught-up in a quite a predicament: he was smart enough to understand that Jesus was an innocent man, yet at the same time he wanted to protect his position as governor by "satisfying the crowd." Therefore, it is within this dilemma that the basic flaw to Pilate's character is revealed. He knew what was right, but ends up buckling under peer pressure, opting instead to become a "crowd pleaser" rather than following his own moral compass; a decision I'm sure, which haunted Pilate for the rest of his life.
