Since the Apostles and early Christians were Jews, the basic structure of liturgical worship in the Early Church was born out of the biblical worship already being practiced by the Jewish people (Exodus chapters 12-13 & 25-31; Isaiah chapter 6; and Daniel chapter 7). Historical evidence points to the fact that these early Christians then had a highly developed liturgical order by the end of the first century – that is, within sixty years of Christ’s Resurrection. Thus, the liturgy that the Orthodox Church continues to celebrate to this day, follows this exact same format set so long ago. That we have kept this tradition alive and unchanged for these two thousand plus years in a world that is constantly changing and in a state of flux is a miracle in and of itself.
