Today we commemorate the Great Martyr Barbara, a saint
who was actually beheaded by her own pagan father in 306 A.D. for having
converted to the Christian Faith. Because she was unable to partake of the Holy
Sacraments, just before her death Barbara implored God asking that all who
remembered her suffering and martyrdom would not die without the possibility of
confessing their sins and receiving Holy Communion. This is why she is often
depicted in iconography holding a chalice. St. Barbara’s relics are enshrined
in St. Vladimir Orthodox Cathedral in Kiev, Ukraine. During my pilgrimages to
Russia I had the honor of venerating and praying before them.
O Holy Greatmartyr Barbara, pray unto God for us!
