“Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish?” (James 3:11)
Humans need water to survive, and the Holy Land in a relatively dry and arid place. Thus, it was important for people to know where water was as they traveled. Many water sources and wells around the Dead Sea produced salty, brackish water that was undrinkable. Yet further north, there were more springs and wells which emitted cool, clear, good tasting water. James’ point, therefore, runs clear: just as a spring cannot bring forth both, fresh and brackish water, neither can our tongue. Praise and profanity should never proceed out of the same mouth!
