Icons of Christ, Mary, and the Saints ..

Icons of Christ, Mary, and the Saints are not portraits of those individuals, but rather, an archetypal image of Who and What that person was. Therefore, we never worship the item (i.e. the image painted on wood), we express and show our love by venerating what that image or model stands for: that real person.
