Today begins the 40-day fasting period in preparation of the Nativity Feast (Christmas).
Today begins the 40-day fasting period in preparation of the Nativity Feast (Christmas). For this reason, this time is referred to as the Nativity Fast. In Western culture it is often called Advent, from the Latin word adventus, meaning “arrival” or “coming;” related to the coming of Christ into the world. It is also referred to in the Orthodox Church as St. Philip’s Fast, since the feast of St. Philip occurs on the day before, November 14.
In history, there is a rich tradition of fasting before any sacred event or holy day, and it is based upon the ancient maxim, “fast before you feast.” Thus, fasting – just like the periods of fasting in the Old and New testaments, Christ’s fasting in the desert for 40-days before beginning His earthly ministry, and the Great Fast prior to Pascha – is a means to prepare bodily and spiritually for this wondrous and sacred event.
It is also a time for us to reflect and meditate upon the “real meaning” of Christmas and to put its meaning into perspective for our life and faith. It should be a time to refocus and recommit ourselves’ to Christ-like and Christ-centered endeavors, carrying forth His works in His Name to His people in the here and now.
Therefore, let us embark upon this sacred preparatory journey together; as a singular church family with a unified common vision and heartbeat, guided by a star to witness and worship the New-Born King.
Fr. John
