Jesus’ ministry was certainly an active one. He traveled constantly and dealt with such great multitudes, we can only guess how exhausting this must have been. Thus, when He climbed up the mountain for the night, it would seem like a good time to get some much-needed rest. Yet Jesus stayed up all night long praying. This is because our Lord had a big decision to make. Although He had many “followers,” Jesus was going to choose twelve of them to be His apostles: those He would teach (disciples) and then send out (apostles) into the world to proclaim His gospel and continue His ministry.
Obviously, Christ was a man of prayer; this is bourn-out throughout scripture. Yet this incident also teaches us the value of prayer prior to making any big decisions in life. Therefore, rather than just turning to God in times of trouble or distress, turn to Him before hand and seek His advice in all situations.
Fr. John
