Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell St. Matthew 9:1-8
Today’s gospel lesson brings up something apropos to meditate upon:
physical and spiritual health. I say this because we are in the midst of a
pandemic, a health crisis in which we are actively imploring our Lord through
prayers to keep us safe, healthy, and to bring about a cure.
Besides coming into this world to be its Savior, another aspect of our
Lord’s ministry was to be the “Physician” and “Healer” to our soul and body.
St. Matthew reiterates this as Jesus cures two different kinds of diseases in
the same man. The first was sin, a disease of the soul; the second, palsy or
paralysis, a sickness of the body.
When someone is physically sick, they are still alive; while a person whose
soul is blackened by sinfulness is spiritually dead. Sin weakens spiritual
health just as neglect of the body can bring about physical ailments. Thus,
Jesus came to make us physically and spiritually “whole,” for being whole is
the first step towards holiness.
Fr. John
