“They are whisperers, backbiters…” (Romans 1:29-30)

The biblical definition a whisperer is someone who spreads rumors, and backbiting means “talking maliciously about someone who is not present.” Both terms entail gossiping about someone behind his or her back. Secret slander is the essence of whispering and backbiting, and it is strongly condemned in the Bible…and by the Church.
