Then turning to the disciples He said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes which see what you see!.

“Then turning to the disciples He said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.’” (Luke 10:23-24)

I’ve always been rather intrigued by this verse, which our Lord speaks to His disciples; mainly because it underlines their unique privilege in knowing, seeing, hearing, and even touching “God” through Jesus Christ. The fact that they were able to walk with Him, be taught by Him, eat with Him, and even just listening firsthand to His gospel teachings must obviously have been a great joy.

However, just like those prior generations who did not get to see, hear, or experience the coming of the Messiah, we – who are awaiting our Lord’s Second Coming – must have this same resolute hope, heeding the words our Lord spoke to Thomas after the Resurrection: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” (John 20:29)
