“O Lord, I love the beauty of Thy house, and the place where Thy glory dwells.” (Psalm 26:8)
Yesterday as I was in church getting ready for a service, I was suddenly struck by how beautiful everything was – the altar, its appointments, liturgical items, iconography, the smell of incense; none of it being mere decoration or adornment, but rather essential elements of an active, sensory, liturgical life. Just as God specifically directed the Hebrews in how to construct the Tabernacle and the Temple, beauty is not
an inhibitor to prayer, but a means by which we are encouraged to transcend the bounds of earth towards the realms of Heaven. Therefore, the beauty of God’s House helps to lift us spiritually.
Fr. John
