People often ask why we have a preparatory Lenten period prior to our Lord’s Nativity, when all around us there is such festive fervor: parties, decorations, Christmas shopping, etc. Yet their question answers itself. Advent invites us to reflect (rather than rush) our way through the Christmas season. More than that, Advent helps us grasp our place in God's salvific plan, to sense in our heart the divine timeline on which we live. So, on the one hand, during Advent we reach back to a perfect world gone wrong and the God who descended into its chaos, while on the other, we reach forward to a King who is returning to set everything right.
Fr. John
