“He catches the wise in their own craftiness” (1st Corinthians 3:19)
“He catches the wise in their
own craftiness” (1st Corinthians 3:19)
There are obviously various
other translations of this verse, but my all-time favorite would be, “The
cleverness of the clever He will thwart.” I like it because it sounds poetic.
Yet the intrinsic meaning is still there and is quite specific: Man’s mind and
God’s mind do not operate on the same level. God’s wisdom is completely
irrational to man’s way of thinking, and vise versa. Everything about Christ’s
coming into the world, His Life, His Ministry, as well as His Passion and
death, all are incongruent with how man would have Jesus’ life play out. That
is why it says that God thwarts, humbles, or dispatches with man’s wisdom by
turning it upside down.
Fr. John Memorich
