“Let both grow together until
the harvest…” (Matthew 13:30)
In His parable about the Wheat
and Tares, the owner of the filed forbidding interference with the growth of
Tares amidst the Wheat until the Day of Judgment has often been a source of
debate. However, if we take into account that God created each of us with a
“free will,” the debate is not that difficult. God gives man the ability to
choose between loving or rejecting Him; following or disregarding His Gospel;
obeying or transgressing His Law (Commandments). Christ did this because choice
is the very basis of “love.” Loving someone or something cannot be imposed,
forced, or coerced, but must occur freely, naturally. Love is an act of choice
and/or acceptance. Without this gift of choice and free will, we’d all be
“Stepford people” instead of God’s people.
Fr. John
