“By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…” (Heb. 11:17)
How far would you be willing to go to prove your faith in God? In today’s epistle lesson we are reminded of one instance in which a man's faith was put to the ultimate test: Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac at God’s command (Genesis 22: 1-19).
Could we have passed such a test? Would we have had enough courage to trust and obey God no matter the cost or consequence? E.M. Forster once wrote, “There lies at the back of every creed something terrible and hard for which the worshiper may one day be required to suffer.” In other words, it’s easy to be a Christian when it’s easy, but altogether different when difficult things are asked for or required. Yet maintaining ones’ faith amidst such adversity is precisely the test which separates the wheat from the chaff.
Fr. John
