“And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.” (Matthew 22:33)
Our Lord astonished the multitudes by His teachings, grasp, and understanding of Holy Scriptures. In fact, the Greek word used for astonished is exelessonto, a verb meaning that those who heard were “struck,” as if a lightening bolt had hit them.
Just as Jesus astonished many during His years on earth, Christ continues to astonish through us whenever we witness to His divine love. We astonish by our deeds, our ability to forgive, our desire to show mercy and compassion upon others. We astonish by “turning the other cheek” and “going the extra mile.” We astonish by loving our enemies and those who hate us. We astonish by standing up for right in the face of evil and speaking the truth in love.
And in a round-about way, being astonished is often the first step towards becoming a Christian.
Fr. John
