“…who comforts us in all our tribulation.” (2nd Corinthians 1:4)
We live in a time when there is much hardship, sorrow, guilt, war, racism, political upheaval, and social problems. To deal with this, people often seek comfort for their sorrows in unproductive ways. Many turn to drugs, alcohol, nicotine, sex and even food to feel better or to forget their pain for a while. Sadly, this pain returns, and the “temporary cures” bring on other physical and emotional problems worse than what they used for to cure.
Christians, however, know the true cure and source of comfort: Jesus Christ. For He alone eases pain, alleviates suffering, assuages grief, and takes away our guilt and shame. His love engulfs us - like grandmother’s soft handmade Afghan – giving us peace, shelter, and refuge from a dark cruel world of sin.
Fr. John
