“Consider the lilies of the field…” (Matthew 6:28)

“Consider the lilies of the field…” (Matthew 6:28)

During His “Sermon on the Mount,” our Lord preached, entertained, and instructed the throngs with wonderful, eye-opening stories, analogies, and teachings – words which continue to transform people even today. Among those teachings Jesus expressly advised them not to worry or be anxious about life, but to trust in God their Provider; for our Heavenly Father knows what we need and cares of us because we are precious in His eyes…just like the lilies of the field.

The lilies Christ was referring to were probably the Scarlet Marathon (Lilium Chalcedonicum), or “Red Turk’s-cap Lily,” which comes into flower at the season of the year when our Lord undoubtedly delivered this sermon. Abundant throughout the Galilean region and conspicuous because of its bright scarlet color, listeners would have easily seen and understood this analogy as Jesus pointed to this beautiful flower growing all around them.

Fr. John
