While instructing His followers to the inevitable fact that bad things will often happen to good people, Jesus refers to the toppling of the tower of Siloam which killed eighteen persons. The collapse of this structure is not mentioned in any other historical records, but was obviously a well-known tragedy amongst the people at that time. Thus, Jesus used current events to illustrate that tragedies are NOT punishments from God and we should resist the temptation blame Him when such things happen.
